Bills, receipts, and warrants for the proposed state prison at Albany, 1796-1803.

A proposed State Prison at Albany was authorized to be built under Chapter 30 of the Laws of 1796. In this law, a Board of Commissioners was appointed, including Philip Schuyler, Abraham Ten Broeck, Daniel Hale, Jeriamiah Van Rensselaer, and Tunis Van Veghten. A number of letters and records in the series include the signatures of those individuals. The Commissioners were authorized to purchase a lot not exceeding four acres, and a number of the records concern the controversy over the purchase of that land. They also were authorized to submit warrants for the cost of building the state prison to the Treasurer, and these warrants were passed on by the Comptroller.
